New guidance on biodiversity and business from EAD

A best practice guide covering all aspects of managing biodiversity within organisations has been published by The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). The guide, which was sponsored by Defra and part a UK government initiative to promote awareness and best practice, was authored by EAD Director Matt Cowley. As Mike Berry, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Marks & Spencer explains, the guide offers ‘common language, practical insights and universally applicable tools to help us manage biodiversity, whatever sector we operate in and wherever we are located’

EAD’s squash team ‘The Environmentals’, including EAD Director Matt Cowley, narrowly missed out on victory in Devon and Exeter Squash Club’s Summer Team League final. After three months of tough competition involving 12 teams, all sponsored by local firms, The Environmentals and FISH met in the final on 16 September. The event attracted more than 100 spectators and lived up to expectation, being decided by the final tie of the evening, won 3-2 by FISH.

EAD has recently welcomed their new ‘Consultant Ecologist’, Ceri Crofts, to the team. Ceri has a first class degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Wales, Swansea and prior to joining EAD was working as a consultant in South Wales. She specialises in habitat assessment and protected species survey and has been involved in many of EAD’s recent projects.

EAD has been instrumental in gaining planning approval for a number of developments where ecology has been a major issue. Projects range from mixed-use developments in the West Midlands to tourism developments in South West England.

EAD Director Dr Matt Cowley has been commissioned by IEMA to co-author ‘Business and Biodiversity – a Good Practice Guide’, which is the latest journal in IEMA’s Practitioner Series. This will provide practical guidance on all aspects of managing biodiversity within organisations and is due for publication in 2006.

EAD have been contracted by Halcrow Group to undertake a major survey of reclamation sites in Wales for the Welsh Development Agency. The results will be used to evaluate the ecological importance of the sites and inform production of a best practice manual for site restoration.

EAD has been providing ecological inputs to a masterplan for a mixed-use development in Paris. Working with Luszczak Associates, ZEF, KPF and a number of other consultants based in France, the plan seeks to regenerate a 60-hectare area near St Denis. EAD has undertaken ecological site surveys, a desk study, consultation and has provided design inputs to the evolving plan.

We are delighted to announce that the Environment Agency has extended EAD’s Environmental Impact Assessment Support Contract until May 2008. Services include advice on the delivery of EIA to the National Environmental Assessment Service; management of EIA on Capital Schemes and environmental supervision during scheme construction.
